Since January 1, 2017, Jean-Pierre Halkin is working in DG Regio as Head of the Competence Centre for "Macro-regions, Transnational, Interregional and External Cooperation, Enlargement. The Competence Centre provides support to DG Regio for 'Territorial Cooperation" questions.
In addition, the Unit advices MS on the implementation of the four Macro-Regional Strategies and supports the implementation of 47 Interreg programmes. Those programmes promote cooperation at transnational/ interregional levels and enhance cooperation between regions on both sides of the external borders of the European Union (IPA, Neighbourhood and Outermost regions).
Prior to this, Jean-Pierre Halkin worked mostly in the "External Relations family" of the European Commission where he was notably in charge of the following Units : "Rural Development, Food Security and Nutrition".
Jean-Pierre was posted in Côte d'Ivoire and the Liberia.
